Headway Hertfordshire - supporting people affected by brain injury

Ever given your brain a thought?

Most of us never give our brain a thought yet it is an amazingly complex, sensitive organ that enables us to function. It weighs just three pounds, it has the texture of blancmange, and is held together in the skull by layers of membrane. Between these layers are blood vessels that keep the brain supplied with blood. And imagine this, it is made up of 100 billion nerve cells which 'talk' to each other through electronic and chemical impulses.

The largest part of the brain is the Cerebral Cortex which is in two parts, with the right side controlling the left side of the body, and the left side of the brain controlling the right.
